The Line of Best Fit was cooler at 6/10: it singled out “Ain’t In LA” as the album’s saving grace and missed the stranger edges of The Provocateur.

The Provocateur

Label
Capitol Records / Polydor
Length
7 tracks, about 20 minutes
Sound
Club-built electro-pop with hyperpop and industrial edges
Formats
Digital, CD, a Canadian-exclusive vinyl, 7-inch singles

The cover was a provocation in itself — Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar read it as a nod to photographer Sophy Rickett. The record took aim at industry exploitation (“SUPERSCAR”), the appetite for watching women fight (“MACHINE GIRL”) and online harassment (“FinallyApologizing”).
